Should I buy new car before my registration expires for my current car to not have to pay renewal fee?

Delmy Varano: Registration is assigned to the car, it can't be transferred over to the new vehicle. If you pay the registration fee on Tuesday and buy a new car on Saturday you'll have to pay for two. If you know you are buying a new car I would suggest coordinating the dates to avoid being charged twice. You can also take the small risk of letting it expire if the dates just aren't going to work out. As long as you don't drive the car and take it straight to the dealer when it's time to trade it in you'll probably be fine. The risk of getting pulled over for an expired tag are slim....Show more

Lucille Saetteurn: YES. If you renew, the money is lost when you sell or trade the old car, and you will be charged full registration (higher) on the new or newer car.Two separate registrations=two separate feesI ALWAYS wait until my registration is close to expiring before selling. I'm cheap I guess....Show more

Christy Tirabassi: This can be kind of tricky! The new ! models are getting ready to come out and that means that car prices are down (and so are trade in values). It is very possible that trading right now might prove to be a good thing to do because dealerships are wanting to clear inventory. If you can wait till December to buy, more then likely you will find the best deal money wise then and save more then the 100 dollars. Now is some states the registration moves over with the car and in others it does not (sales tax still has to be paid). If you live in one of those states what to do would be a lot different then if it does not.So if you can wait till after Thanksgiving to buy a car, I would suggest you wait....Show more
