What's the difference between primary care physicians and how do I chose one?

Warren Kotter: Internal Medicine: does not practice ob/gy, and spent a three year residency focusing only on adult medicine eg heart attacks, peptic ulcers, etc. This is who I would pick.Family Practice: this residency is outdated in a lot of ways given our current health care system. It is like General Practice (see below) with a 3 year residency. They spend time in surgery, delivering babies, in pediatrics, and in adult medicine. So in my opinion, their time is divided, and Internal Medicine is more focused. As my own sterotype, FP are more personable.General Practioner: is a very outdated term. It is when you just do ONE year of training after medical school and then go out and practice. 50 years ago, this was commonplace, but now most people do a residency...thank God.Ob/Gyn: pretty obvious. Just deals with delivering babies, infertility and gynecological issues. Won't deal with general health issues such as chest pain, joint pain, headaches, etc.FP or IM are! my choices. Oh and FP could do your pap at your annual physical, so that's an advantage....Show more
