I'm going to be a first time mom any day now... and have a few general questions about caring for an infant?

Willetta Munhall: There are no stupid questions :) If you don't already have the book What To Expect When Expecting And What To Expect The First Year, I suggest you get them. They helped me a lot. 1: You don't need to bathe a newborn every day. Their umbilical cord wont dry propperly and then the child could be left with an akward belly button. Instead for the first couple weeks I would just get a wet wash clot and wipe the baby down every day but give the baby a bath after major poop explosions, lol. Once the umbilical cord dries and falls off then you can start washing your baby every day if you want. 2: Every child is different. Some start sleeping threw the night at day one! Your baby will let you know what his schedule is :)3: Some people use patroleum jelly for diaper rashes. But at walmart in the diaper rash area there is this stuff called Boudreax's Butt Paste, and it is truely a baby's butt's best friend, lol. But for the umbilical cord just use colorless rubbing! alcohol and rub it with a q-tip. Don't soak it. If you get it to wet then it wont dry right. 4: It's hard to tell friends and family they can't hold a newborn baby. But if you make sure they use PLENTY of hand sanitizer then it shouldn't be a problem. NO sick family! Even if they have a slight fever don't let them near the baby. The first month is critical for the babies health out here in the world. Plus, it's not like you have to return him in 90 days or anything, lol. Try to take the baby outside as little as possible for the first 6 weeks. But babies can never get to much attention and love from Mommy and Daddy I'm not a doctor, just a mom. Take every bit of advice your given right now but only use what you think will work. Welcome to Motherhood :)...Show more

Charlotte Bryar: I have a 3 month old, and still to this day, I give him a bath every 2-3 days, and lotion him everyday with baby lotion. He ate about every 3 hours on the dot. He would wake up to eat, but ! when he slept, I didn't wake him up to feed. I would just let ! him sleep. They will wake up when they are hungry.I put petroleum jelly behind his ears every other day and started doing that around 2 months because his ears are scabby and gross if I don't and that's what his dr told me to do. Its a cause of cradle cap. I also use it when his bottom looks a bit red from wearing a diaper and it goes away the next day. And also I liked holding my new born and passing him around because I wanted him to be friendly with everyone and not be one of those "only my mom can hold me babies" lol and he is doing just perfect. Anyone can hold him and he is just as happy as can be:) I do advise you let him sleep in his bed with a mobile on to fall asleep asap because I started to let my baby fall asleep in my arms and now it seems like he wont fall asleep by him self anymore. He has to be next to me, and it wasn't like that before I started letting him fall asleep next to me every night. He use to just watch his mobile until his eyes closed. lolBut yo! u will do fine:) every mom has their own style, and yahoo answers has helped me with A LOT of my little questions. also, this site is WONDERFUL!!! has everything you need to know! http://www.babycenter.com/...Show more

Gale Hartt: 1, i did a sponge bath untill her cord fell off!! Now shes 3 months old, she gets one either every day or every other day!! She enjoys it!!! 2,my daughter woke up every two to 3 hours for a bottle on her own!!!! Now she sleeps through the night, i just let her rest. 3. The jelly is used for all the things ppl said above, and also to take rectal temperature. It lubricates the thermometer!!! And its the best easiest way to take a babies temp if ya ask me!!! 4, my baby got held a lot at the beginning, when she got about a month old i made sure she didnt get held when she was getting sleepy, now if i lay her down she goes right to sl! eep. Try to keep your baby on a routine. It might take a couple weeks b! ut the WILL get used to it!!!!!...Show more

Kimberlee Bowdish: "--how often do you bathe a newborn?"You can bathe them every day if they seem to enjoy baths, or every 2-3 days if you prefer. Sponge baths are fine for the early weeks or even months, if you find it easier or if your baby doesn't care for the tub. However, it's important to always wash or wet wipe the diaper area at every single diaper change. "--Sites say a newborn eats every 2-4 hours... when he is sleeping, do you let him sleep and just feed him when he wakes up hungry?"The baby can sleep until he wakes up hungry, unless the baby has some problem like failure to thrive. In that case, a doctor may advise you to wake the baby for feedings. Normally, the 2-4 hour thing is an estimate. Most babies have times of day when they have long sleeps, possibly more than four hours at a time; and other times when they want to be fed more frequently than every 2 hours. Following the baby's hunger rather than a clock! is usually better; the baby knows what he needs. If you are breastfeeding, feeding on demand tends to work much, much better than feeding on a schedule. "--What is the use of patroleum jelly for on a newborn?"It's used to treat and/or prevent diaper rash. If you change diapers promptly, sometimes you can avoid diaper rash completely, and never need any products. If your baby tends to get rashes, use petroleum jelly after each diaper change. Remove wet/soiled diaper and clean diaper area thoroughly; apply a thin layer of petroleum jelly to the affected area, and put on clean diaper. "--Is it bad for a newborn to be held constantly and passed around?"No, it's extremely good for them. It aids their physical and intellectual development and reduces stress. Most human societies around the world care for babies this way traditionally. Babies need a lot of physical contact - literally need it to survive, and to grow and develop normally. It is impossible to overdo it with a newbor! n. Hold the baby as much as you can....Show more

Blaine Connett: ! once a week (too often they will get cradle's cap)Let them sleep and when they wake up they will usually want to be fed, we learned very quickly my daughter had her own cry for milk she screamed "LAI LAI LAI" until she was fed.The jelly is meant for bum rashesNo, as long as no one is sick. The first 2 weeks is pure hell until you figure out a routine, just pray your little one doesn't have colic....Show more

Jed Mutone: Hey girl! You're gna love being a mommy! I'm a first time mom of a 3 month old princess....1. I bathe her every other day unless she spit up a huge mess or has a really messy diaper- word of advice? The creases of the neck can get really dirty and smelly so atleast once or twice everyday clean the creases of the neck with a wipe :)2. When she was first born and for the next few weeks I followed the rule to feed every 3 hours and to gently wake her by changing her clothes or cleaning her with a wipe. They don't like it, but that's the point. My baby was ! on the lower percentile of weight gain, so if I hadn't aroused her to feed, she probably wouldn't have gained the proper amount of weight. I didn't let my daughter sleep more than 5 hours at a time until she was 8 weeks. 3. Don't know, I don't use it??4. I hold my baby as much as I want and I DON'T let her "cry it out@. It takes a while but you learn what certain cries mean. I have learned that when she cries, she's either hungry or in pain, like tummy trouble & needs to release gas or burp. So I pick her up and try to solve the problem. Passing her around- I don't do that. I also ask to hand wash before holding. Hold your baby and love on him as much as you want! Good luck and congrats!...Show more

Roland Stampley: definite, a wild rabbit might have parasites. Heck, I manage my clean sparkling kinfolk teach rabbits for parasites on a everyday foundation. placed the infant back as on the brink of the place you got here across it as a danger. in line with danger it r! an out from a sheltered section? Like a bush or a dip interior the gras! s? it is not substantial in case you dealt with it or no longer. it rather is superb danger for survival is with it somewhat is mom. At that length it rather is confident to nevertheless be nursing nevertheless. it rather is a severe time for it systematically. Bottle fed infant rabbits do exactly no longer stay. they could be tube fed and the widespread public do no longer comprehend a thank you to try this individual. it somewhat is diverse than with a cat or a canine. Even then, they do no longer continually stay. it somewhat is far greater appropriate off exterior the place mom can locate it. do no longer save looking out the window for mom. She'll possibly be scared and stay away fom her infant. mothers feed circulate away their infants to maintain them risk-free. they simply come back to feed each 24 hours and that's sufficient for infant to advance up healthful. placed it back....Show more

Lest! er Haschke: 1. Couple time each week. They do not need to be bathed daily. 1-2 times per week is adequate. I bathe mine every Friday, and then usually one other time during the week I will bring her in the tub with me to soak (she looooves it! Calms right down as I hold her and let her lower body drift in the warm water). I wipe her face every morning with a warm cloth, and I use cloth wipes with homemade solution for diaper changes so that area gets cleaned at each change2. I was told to wake her up to feed every 2 hours. But I only did that for the first week. My daughter has always slept for 3-4 hour stretches at a time at night (we bed share), so I just let her sleep. I do get a bit engorged at night, so sometimes I wake up and pump. But I haven't woken her at night to feed since that first week.3. I personally wouldn't use petroleum jelly on a newborn. It's mineral based.I uUse plant-based oils, such as virgin coconut oil, for dry skin and even diaper rash4. Not bad, b! ut I'd make sure everyone washed their hands first and didn't have a co! ld....Show more

Emile Midgley: First of all congrats, Second, don't worry, those are not dumb questionsI have 2 children. I bathed them every other day, but if they had an explosion of a diaper, or spit up alot I always gave them an extra bath, just so they weren't stinky. I like a good smelling baby :) However, do clean your child everyday with a wash cloth and warm water.I fed my baby every 2 hours at first, because it helps your milk to come in. My doctor also suggests every 2 hours. At first I did wake baby up at night, because they need that nourishment in the first few weeks, as well, it will help your milk to come in well. Petroleum jelly for a baby can be used for many things....it's basically just vaseline. You can use it on their bum at every diaper change to prevent rash (although Zincofax works much better) You can also use it for cradle cap, minor scrapes etc.It isn't bad for a baby to be held constantly. A baby NEEDS human contact, especially with their! mother and father. A baby needs to feel nurtured and loved. They really suggest skin to skin contact, so strip baby down to diaper and hold against your or partners bare chest and have a blanket over top. It's also good for baby to bond with grandparents and other family, so by all means let them hold baby, it also helps them build an immunity. However is someone has a really bad cold or flu I would say keep them away since baby doesn't have a good immunity yet!...Show more
